As a young girl, Victoria Bantug Hoffarth grew up in Negros, Philippines. She left her provincial town in 1964 for university at Maryknoll College in Manila, and then onwards to New York City for Columbia Univeristy and New York University, earning a master's degree in psychology in 1971 and a PhD in media ecology in 1976. In 1979, Hoffarth married a German economist, spending many years together in the Philippines, Germany, and in the UK as a dual-career couple: she, teaching in business schools and doing consulting work on women-in-mangement; he, working for international development banks. Dr Hoffarth's husband passed in 2016, and she now divides her time between Manila and London; and with her son in Berlin.
